Founded in April 2020, Higashi-Mino Beer Works (the brand name is “Kamado Brewery”) was born from the meeting of young beer enthusiast Ms. Azuma (current president), her friend, and Mr. Niwa, one of Japan’s most renowned beer brewers.

Born in Nakatsugawa City, Mr. Niwa began brewing beer at local brewery Hakusekikan Beer in 1997, and since then has served as brewmaster across the country, earning a legendary reputation as a mentor among craftsmen.

Niwa met Ms. Azuma, a beer enthusiast dedicated to revitalizing his hometown, and returned to Gifu Prefecture to pursue beer brewing, nurturing the next generation, and contributing to his hometown.

The brand “Kamado Beer,” named after the local place name “Kamado town,” aims for a beer that, like Japanese cuisine, focuses on subtlety rather than overpowering flavors. The company also produces many products that incorporate local ingredients and/or stories into their offerings.

Kamado is located about 4 kilometers south of Nakasendo Okute-juku along the Shita-kaido (a road connecting Oi-juku and Nagoya), and this area is also known for its thriving production of “Mino” pottery.

They actively contribute to regional revitalization by collaborating with local potters to create beer cups and attracting new residents.

Ms. Azuma started their business locally with a passion for beer and hometown in hand. She’s now a key figure in local revitalization.

At the beer bar, you can enjoy beer served in cups crafted by contemporary Mino ware artists.
This beer is a collaboration with a sushi restaurant: “Gari” (pickled ginger) beer. Ms, Azuma’s diverse ideas and Mr. Niwa’s extensive experience and technical skills have produced a unique range of beers.

The wood used for the bar counter comes from a cedar tree at Shinmei Shrine in Ōkute-juku that fell down in July 2020.
A portion of this 670-year-old tree, a source of local pride and identity, has been entrusted to this Kamado Brewery.

Recently, a young baker has moved to Kamado and is helping out at Kamado Brewery.
You can also enjoy bread made using spent beer grains as a snack at the bar.
