Areas & Spots
This area is a mountainous region that crosses many mountain passes along the Nakasendo Highway, which traverses the center of Japan.
The SUWA area is geologically the belly button of Japan, the KISO area passes between the Kiso and Ontake mountain ranges, the HIGASHI-MINO area is nurtured by the benefits of granite and the gentle topography reflected such as Byobuyama-Enasan
fault, and the NIHON RHEIN area descends the Kiso River and passes into the broad terrain of the Nobi Plain.
The geographical environment and the influence of the highways embody the landscape and culture of Nakasendo, with its commonalities and diversities.
SUWA AREA
The accumulation of history formed in the geographical environment in the navel of Japan.

KISO AREA
“Kiso Road is all in the mountains.” – Touson Shimazaki (19c. Novelist born in Magome)
The Kiso area is a steep valley sandwiched between the Ontake Mountains and the Hida Mountains. The Kiso River flows through the center of the valley, and the abundant and beautiful water from the mountains pours into the valley.
In the mountainous area, mountain worship, food and lifestyle culture of mountain villages, and industries such as lumberjacks, woodworking, and horse production have developed with a unique sensibility of inhabitaits.

HIGASHI-MINO
The serene mountains and basins of Mino offer relief to travelers.
Higashi-Mino, the land at the foot of Mount Ena, where gentle mountains spread out past the Kiso Mountains, offers a peaceful rural landscape.
Here, cultural influences from the Sea of Japan side (Hokuriku and Hida) or the Pacific side (middle-east of Aichi pref., west part of Shizuoka pref., and south of Nagano pref.) have been brought in through highways, and a unique culture has developed in the geographical unity of the foot of Mt. Ena.
